Bucket List #31 – Learn to make gravy

I had LOTS of offers to learn how to make gravy, where have you people been? Kari Mitchell helped set this one up for me. I took up the offer from the folks at Open Arms of Minnesota. They are one of the recipients from The Breast Cancer Ride that The Tittsburgh Wheelers participated in this summer. For those of you who don’t know who they are, they provide nutritious meals to cancer patients and their families during treatment. They are really a top notch organization.

On November 24th I went over to their new building to learn how to make gravy. I was met by their executive chef Nick Collins who got me prepped with an apron and hairnet, no one looks good in these by the way, and after a thorough hand washing I went to the biggest kitchen I’ve ever been in. It was there that I met Austin, who is the greatest gravy making instructor in the world. I learned so much that day! It was better than watching Food Network and I had a great time getting to know Austin and learning how to make gravy. I’m the gravy master. Bonus, I brought some home for our Thanksgiving dinner the next day. It was delicious. Thank you Nick, Austin and Open Arms of Minnesota!

The next one will take place this Saturday, March 27th at 10:30 am at the REI in Bloomington, near 494 and Lyndale Ave.

The 2010 Ride

The Hartford Breast Cancer Ride presented by RE/MAX Results will take place August 7-8, 2010, starting and ending at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota, with an overnight stay at Treasure Island Resort and Casino near Red Wing. We are once again very pleased to have Open Arms of Minnesota and Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Minnesota Affiliate as our two benefiting agencies. And, yes, it is still the only two-day bicycle ride for breast cancer in the United States.

Are you planning to do the Ride this year? Well then there is no time like today to register and begin your training and fund-raising! The number of participants doubled last year and we have high hopes that they will double again in 2010, as The Ride continues to grow.

If you have never done anything like this before, but are considering getting involved as a Rider or Crew Member, don’t be nervous. You can do this. Men and women of all ages and abilities have participated in the first two Breast Cancer Rides and the Ride is fully supported along the entire route with pit stops, food, water, first aid, and a motorcycle crew to provide safe crossing on busy roads.

Are you ready for The Hartford Breast Cancer Ride presented by RE/MAX Results? Did you take part in the first Ride back on June 21-22, 2008 as a Rider or Crew member? How about the second Ride on August 1-2, 2009? What are your memories of the Ride? Was it the extension loop on Day 1? The outstanding accommodations and food at Treasure Island Resort and Casino? The wacky, thirst-quenching pit stops? A particular hill, perhaps?

This is your place to reminisce or share any other thoughts you have about the Ride.

The Hartford Breast Cancer Ride presented by RE/MAX Results began as a vision… as a way of honoring a beloved mother who had lived with the disease for many years, yet ultimately lost her battle with cancer. The Hartford Breast Cancer Ride presented by RE/MAX Results exists because of men and women who Ride, Crew, or volunteer because of something in their lives that has moved them to act.

The Ride benefits two wonderful organizations: Open Arms of Minnesota, and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Minnesota Afilliate. That is reason enough to participate in this great event, but we know you have other reasons.

What’s your reason? Why are you participating in this year’s Ride? This is the place you can share your story with others. You never know who it might motivate or inspire to do more or give more to this year’s Ride.

Training

The Hartford Breast Cancer Ride presented by RE/MAX Results is just that… a ride. It’s not a race! Nevertheless, you can’t just hop on a bike a go 100 to 150 miles over the course of two days without any training whatsoever. Whether you are a seasoned veteran of bike riding or a novice who hasn’t climbed on a bike in years, you need some preparation.

As you probably know, the 2010 Ride is scheduled to start and end at the Mall of America. On Day 1 we will be biking down to Treasure Island Resort and Casino. There we will camp (or stay in comfy hotel rooms) for the night. On Day 2, we’ll roll out of Treasure Island and ride back to the Mega-mall in Bloomington. Sorry, it’s not all downhill, and we haven’t been able to arrange for a complete absence of wind.

What are you doing to prepare for the Ride? Are you taking any spinning classes? Have you changed your diet? What kind of mileage are you putting in on the roads? What is the best way to get ready for a two-day bike event like this?

Fundraising

Riders are required to raise $750 in pledges in order to participate in The Hartford Breast Cancer Ride presented by RE/MAX Results.
